Tourists, visitors and new residents alike are likely to hear the term “Thermal Belt” in relation to the towns in and around Tryon NC. Perhaps some are familiar with the term, but most likely many are not. Trying to explain “Thermal Belt” to someone can be rather tricky, so it is best to leave it to those who can do so and do so well. According to John Vining, the now retired Polk County Extension Director, the term “refers to a mountainside zone, where frost or freezing temperatures are less likely to occur than they are at either higher or lower elevations.”
In layman’s terms that means the surrounding mountains of our Foothills provide protection from too much heat and too much cold in comparison to other areas just a few miles away. Just one more reason to say “Nearly perfect, Always Tryon.” It is a great place to live, work and play.
