This is Horse Country and has been since the early 1920’s, when it was discovered by sportsman and equestrian, Carter Brown. Brown started the Tryon Hounds, the Tryon Riding & Hunt Club Horse Show, and Steeplechase. People came to enjoy the equestrian sports in our moderate climate, and built farms in what is now known as the Old Hunt Country. Since those days, all the equestrian disciplines have found a home in the area, and you will find horse farms located in Tryon, Columbus, Mill Spring, NC and Landrum, Campobello, Gowensville SC. The rolling lush pastures and board fencing are a natural part of the landscape.
We have competitions for Hunter Jumpers, Dressage, Jumpers, Eventing, Western, and more. There is a full schedule at the Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC), the Foothills Equestrian & Nature Center (FENCE), and Harmon Field. From schooling shows to international levels, you will find it here.
Foxhunting has been a tradition since 1926 when the Tryon Hounds was founded. The sport continues today, with the Tryon Hounds and the Green Creek Hounds hunting from September to mid-March.
Trail riding is an incredible asset. There are several trail systems, the Foothills Equestrian Trail Association (FETA), Collinsville Equestrian Trail Association (CETA), North Pacolet Trail Association (Caroland Farms) Golden Hills of Fairview, Greenspace of Fairview, and Gowensville Equestrian & Nature Trail System (GENTS).
And of course, being horse country, we have the best local equine services. Top veterinarians, state of the art equine hospital, farriers, massage and acupuncture specialists, feed and supply, tack stores and trainers for every discipline.
